Are there any laws that protect animals from being used for fur farming?
In Indiana, there are laws that protect animals from being used for fur farming. The Indiana General Assembly passed a law in March 2007 which prohibits the possession, buying, selling, or manufacturing of the fur or hide of any animal used for fur farming. This means that any fur or hide of an animal used for fur farming cannot be sold or bought in the state of Indiana. Additionally, the law prohibits the manufacturing, importing, and exporting of fur or hides from animals used for fur farming. This law applies to anyone who would be involved in the process of producing fur or hides from animals kept in captivity for fur production. Farmers must also adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare. Fur farms must be registered with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Service, and inspections must take place on a regular basis to ensure the animals are being treated humanely. All fur farms must follow the animal welfare regulations and the Indiana Animal Care and Control statutes as well. Furthermore, it is illegal to keep animals in captivity for the purpose of fur farming. Any person found in violation of these laws may face serious consequences including a felony charge and possible jail time.
