What is the difference between trial and appellate courts?

Trial courts and appellate courts are two different types of courts. Trial courts are where cases are usually heard initially. These courts are responsible for determining the facts of a case and making legal decisions. Appellate courts are higher courts that review the decisions made by trial courts. The purpose of appellate courts is to review lower court decisions to ensure that the law is applied correctly. Appellate courts generally do not have the power to make rulings about the guilt or innocence of a party, or to award damages. Instead, they review the evidence and arguments presented to the trial court to determine if any errors were made in the decision. In Mississippi, the highest appellate court is the Supreme Court of Mississippi. This court hears appeals from lower state courts, as well as some federal cases. It is responsible for the interpretation of Mississippi state laws. The court also hears appeals from federal district courts and other state courts. Overall, the primary difference between trial and appellate courts is that trial courts are responsible for hearing cases and making legal rulings, while appellate courts are responsible for reviewing the decisions of trial courts to make sure that the law is applied correctly.
