What is the appellate court's jurisdiction over a given case?

In Texas, appellate courts have jurisdiction over cases that are appealed from lower court decisions. This means that the appellate court has the authority to review the decisions of lower courts and can reject, modify, or affirm those decisions. If the appellate court disagrees with the decision of the lower court, it can order a new trial. Appellate courts also have jurisdiction to review the procedures used by lower courts to ensure that justice has been given in the case, as well as the accuracy of the facts presented in the lower court ruling. The appellate court will also consider legal arguments presented by either side in the case, such as whether the lower court properly applied the law. The appellate court often has the power to grant a writ of certiorari, which is a written request for the court to review a lower court decision. The court may accept such requests if the questions raised in the request are of public importance. Generally speaking, the Texas appellate court will not consider the merits of the dispute over which the lower court has jurisdiction, but will only review the legal issues raised in the lower court’s decision. For example, an appellate court may not consider the credibility of witnesses, but rather determine whether the lower court made errors in its interpretation of the law.
