How do I cite to appellate court decisions?
When citing appellate court decisions in Florida, you must provide the source of the decision, its date, the court decision, and the page number on which the decision can be found. The source of the decision contains the court abbreviation, the year the decision was issued, and the docket numbers (for example, Fla. 1965, 111 So.2d 725). The date of the decision is the day, month, and year it was issued (for example, August 6, 1965). The court decision is the name of the court and the volume in which it was published (for example, Supreme Court of Florida, 111 So.2d 725). Finally, the page number is the page on which the decision can be found (for example, 111 So.2d at 725). When citing an appellate court decision, the citation should appear as follows: Fla. 1965, 111 So.2d 725, Supreme Court of Florida, August 6, 1965, 111 So.2d at 725. In addition to these elements, you may also need to provide the title of the opinion if there are multiple decisions for the same source. The title should be included in quotation marks. For example: Fla. 1965, 111 So.2d 725, Supreme Court of Florida, August 6, 1965, “Opinion on Appeal” 111 So.2d at 725.
