How do I cite to appellate court decisions?

When citing to appellate court decisions in North Carolina, there are certain rules to follow. First, you must include a full citation including the decision’s court and year of decision. If the decision was made by the North Carolina Court of Appeals, begin the citation with “N.C. Ct. App.” followed by the year of the decision. If the decision was made by the Supreme Court of North Carolina, begin the citation with “N.C.” followed by the year. You must also include a pinpoint citation and the style of the opinion (e.g. published, unpublished, etc.). A pinpoint citation is the page number in the published opinion on which the relevant fact, section, statement, or language appears. The pinpoint citation should be wrapped in parentheses and appear directly after the year of the decision. In addition, for unpublished decisions, you must also include the software information of where the opinion was published. This should include the source and citation number. This information is usually provided in a footnote. To summarize, when citing to a North Carolina appellate court decision you must include the court, year of decision, pinpoint citation, style of opinion, and (for unpublished decisions), source and citation number. By following these rules you can properly cite to appellate court decisions in North Carolina.
