What is the appellate court’s jurisdiction over a case?

Appellate courts in Indiana have limited jurisdiction, or the power, to review the decisions of lower courts. Specifically, the appellate court in Indiana has the authority to review decisions on questions of law. This means that the appellate court can review the lower court’s ruling to make sure that the court followed the law appropriately. The appellate court may not, however, review the lower court’s findings of fact, which means that the appellate court typically cannot review the lower court’s decision on factual issues, such as which witness was more credible or the accuracy of a witness’s testimony. The appellate court can review decisions from a variety of courts in Indiana, including the trial courts, administrative agencies, and boards and commissions. Additionally, the appellate court can review certain interlocutory orders from the lower courts, which are rulings on issues that are made before the final judgment of a case. The appellate court may also grant stays of the lower court’s decision, which means that the decision is put on hold until the appellate court is able to review the decision and determine whether it should be reversed or affirmed.
