How often do the appellate courts review their decisions?

In California, appellate courts review their decisions on a regular basis, but the frequency of this review depends on the court. Generally speaking, the Supreme Court of California reviews decisions at least once a year. When the Supreme Court rules on a case, the ruling is final and cannot be appealed to a higher court. The California Courts of Appeal hear appeals from lower courts in the state. These courts review their decisions more frequently, often on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. The appeals heard by the Courts of Appeal are reviewed by a panel of judges, and a majority ruling is issued. Upon ruling they may also order additional proceedings at the lower court level. The ruling of the Courts of Appeal can be appealed to the Supreme Court of California, but the Supreme Court typically only reviews decisions of the Court of Appeal if the case raises significant legal questions requiring an interpretation of California state law. The Supreme Court typically does not review cases that are factually complicated and do not involve any legal questions.
