What is the Federal Arbitration Act?

The Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) is a federal law in the United States which was enacted in 1925. It governs the enforcement of arbitration agreements in interstate and international commerce. The law promotes the idea of resolving disputes through arbitration instead of litigation, and sets the standards and requirements for arbitration agreements and related proceedings. The FAA applies to all arbitration agreements between citizens of different states, between U.S. citizens and foreign citizens, and between entities in different countries. It also applies when at least one signatory of the arbitration agreement is engaged in interstate or foreign commerce. The FAA preempts state laws that would otherwise invalidate or restrict the enforceability of arbitration agreements. In Ohio, the FAA is enforced by federal and state courts, and arbitration agreements can be enforced in either court. The FAA states that arbitration agreements are valid, irrevocable, and enforceable, and that judicial orders granting an arbitration award are both enforceable and binding on parties unless successfully challenged.
