What is art law?
Art law is the regulation of activities related to the creation, display, and sale of art. It applies to both traditional and digital works of art. Art law covers a wide range of topics, from copyright and trademark issues to contracts and licensing agreements. In Kansas, art law consists of both state and federal laws, as well as international laws related to art. At the state level, the Kansas Art and Cultural Resources Department, as well as local arts organizations such as the Kansas City Public Library, provide advice on art law-related issues. There are also organizations such as the Kansas Arts Education Foundation, the Kansas Arts and Humanities Council, and the Kansas Alliance for Historic Preservation that can provide assistance. At the federal level, the Copyright Act of 1976 protects the rights of all artists, both professional and amateur. Additionally, the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 recognizes the moral rights of artists, such as the right of an artist to be credited when their work is used. As with most areas of the law, the best way to ensure that you are following the appropriate laws and regulations when dealing with art is to seek the advice of a lawyer who is knowledgeable in this area.
