How does copyright law apply to artwork?

Copyright law applies to artwork in Delaware in order to protect the intellectual property of the artist. Copyright law grants the artist exclusive legal rights to control who can use, reproduce, and make derivative works of their artwork. Copyright covers artwork in a variety of mediums, including photographs, sculptures, paintings, drawings, sketches, and literary works such as novels, poems, and plays. Copyright law also protects the artist from someone illegally taking their work and claiming it as their own. Without copyright law, it would be difficult for artists to protect their work and get paid for their creations, so it is important to be aware of copyright laws when it comes to artwork. Copyright ownership is typically given to the artist; however, if the artwork was created on behalf of an employer, the employer is the copyright owner. Also, if a person commissions a work, such as a painting, and pays for it, the commissioner does not have copyright ownership of the artwork, they only have the right to display the artwork. Copyright law also grants the artist the right to make money off of their artwork by allowing them to control who can reproduce and distribute copies of the work. It also allows them to receive compensation for their work through licensing agreements. Lastly, copyright law allows the artist to profit when someone tries to create and sell a work that is similar to the one they created.
