How does copyright law apply to artwork?

Copyright law applies to artwork to protect the intellectual property of the artist or creator. It grants the creator exclusive rights to their work and prevents other people from using their work without permission. In Washington, the Copyright Act of 1976 gives copyright owners exclusive rights over their artwork. This includes the right to reproduce the work, the right to publicly display the work, the right to perform the work, the right to make derivative works from the original, and the right to distribute copies. These rights can be sold or given away, and the copyright owner can set a fee for permission to use the work. In addition, the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 provides additional protections for artwork. This law recognizes the right of the artist to be credited for their work and the right of the artist to prevent the destruction of certain works they have created. It also allows the artist to prevent alteration or modification of their work if it is considered not to be in the best interest of their reputation. Copyright law provides protection for artwork so that the creator can retain control over how their work is used and how it is shared. Without copyright law, artwork would be more vulnerable to exploitation and may not remain faithful to the original vision of the artist.
