What is an infringement of copyright?

An infringement of copyright occurs when a person unlawfully copies or uses a copyrighted work without the consent of the copyright holder. Copyright is a form of intellectual property that gives the author of a work exclusive rights to the work, including the right to reproduce it, display it, or distribute it in any format. In Oregon, copyright infringement is addressed by the U.S. Copyright Act and the Oregon Copyright Act. The Oregon Copyright Act states that a copyright holder owns exclusive rights to their work, in any form, and any unauthorized use of such work is considered copyright infringement. This includes reproducing, distributing, publicly displaying, or creating derivative works of the copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. Copyright infringement is considered a violation of the law, and can result in legal action, including civil penalties, monetary damages, and, in some cases, criminal charges. It is important to note that copyright infringement can occur both intentionally and unintentionally. Even using a small portion of a copyrighted work without permission can be considered infringement. This is why it is important to understand copyright law and get permission from the copyright holder before using their work.
