What is a transfer of copyright?

A transfer of copyright in North Carolina is when an owner of a copyright, such as an artist or composer, transfers their right to own and control their original works to someone else. This transfer is done as either a sale, lease, or license, and is usually done in exchange for money or some other kind of compensation. When someone transfers the copyright to another person, the new copyright owner can then use the material as they please, such as making copies, making it into a derivative work, and publishing it for others to use. The new copyright owner can also license the material to someone else, so that they can also use it. On the other hand, the original creator no longer has control over the material, and cannot use it without permission from the new copyright owner. The law regarding transfers of copyright in North Carolina is part of the federal Copyright Act of 1976, which defines the rights of copyright owners and transferors. This law also provides legal protection to help ensure that the unexpected use of copyrighted material does not take place without the permission of the copyright owner. It also sets out the terms of transferring the copyright, such as how long the transfer should last and what kind of compensation is allowed.
