What is a non-exclusive license?

A non-exclusive license is a legal agreement between two parties, typically a licensor and licensee. In an art law context, it can be thought of as an agreement that grants permission for an artist to use their work in some way. In Oklahoma, a non-exclusive license generally allows for the licensee to use the artwork for a specific purpose, such as in a published book, magazine, or other printed material, without the need to get permission from the licensor each time. A licensor retains rights to the artwork and can also grant additional licenses to others. Non-exclusive licenses also usually include some form of compensation for the licensor, typically in the form of a licensing fee. The licensor may also be granted royalties, depending on the terms of the agreement. The agreement may also outline other terms, such as how long the license is in effect, the territory the license is valid for, and any restrictions or limitations that the licensee must abide by. In Oklahoma, non-exclusive licenses are important for protecting the rights of both licensors and licensees. Since the licensor is still able to grant additional licenses or receive compensation for their work, they can be properly compensated for their work while the licensee can freely use the artwork for their project.
