What is a public domain work?

A public domain work is a work that is no longer protected by copyright laws. This means that anyone can use, copy, or modify the work for any purpose without seeking permission from the original copyright holder. In Florida, any work published in the United States before 1924 is considered to be in the public domain, as are works published between 1924 and 1977 without a copyright notice. Works published after 1977 without a copyright notice are only protected for 95 years from the date of publication. This means that, by the turn of the next century, works created since 1977 will start to enter into the public domain in Florida. In addition, any work created by the federal government is considered to be in the public domain. This includes works of literature, artwork, music, and more created by or for the federal government. Additionally, any work available for free from the federal government, such as data, statistics, and photos, is also in the public domain. Public domain works can be a valuable resource for artists, since they are free to use and modify without worrying about infringing on someone else’s copyright. It is important to always check a work’s copyright status before using it, since not all works that look like public domain works are actually public domain.
