How is artwork appraised?

Artwork appraisal is the process of determining the worth or value of an artwork or artwork collection. In Texas, appraisers must be certified or otherwise qualified to appraise artwork and must follow the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Some of the methods appraisers may use to appraise artwork include comparison to similar pieces by the artist; the art’s physical condition, provenance (history of ownership); current market trends; the artist’s reputation; and age, rarity, and condition of the artwork. The appraiser may also review auction records or similar sales to compare prices of similar artworks. Artwork that has been signed, dated, and certified as authentic will generally be worth more. The appraised value of the artwork is determined by the appraiser taking into account all the above factors. Generally, the appraised value is based on market value, which is the amount a willing buyer would pay for the artwork. The appraiser is able to provide an objective opinion about the value of the artwork, which can be used for various purposes such as insurance, tax, estate planning, and charitable contributions. In Texas, the appraisal must be conducted by a certified appraiser and be signed and dated. The appraisal must also be in writing and include the signature and qualifications of the appraiser, the date of appraisal, the scope of work, and a thorough description of the artwork being appraised, including photographs. All of this information must be provided to the commissioning party. Ultimately, appraising artwork requires knowledge of the art market, the artist, the artwork itself, and experience in appraising to ensure that an accurate and fair appraisal is conducted.
