What is a ‘chain of title’?
Chain of title is a legal term used in the field of art law, specifically in regards to ownership claims. In Wisconsin, a chain of title is a document that outlines the history of who legally owned a piece of art. It starts with the creator of a work of art, such as a painting or sculpture, and then follows the path through the original owner to subsequent buyers. In some cases, there may be multiple owners in the chain. This chain of title is important in order to determine who legally owns a work and can help prevent the artwork from being stolen or falsely claimed. Additionally, this chain of title can prove important in cases of copyright infringement. A copyright is a legal right that an artist has to his or her artwork and being able to prove ownership through a chain of title can be essential in defending these copyrights. In the event that a work of art is disputed, the chain of title can provide evidence that a dispute is valid or invalid.
