What are the different types of asbestos-related diseases?
Asbestos is a fiber that was commonly used in construction, shipbuilding, and other industries until its health hazards were made known. Asbestos exposure has been linked to various diseases, many of which can be very serious. These diseases include lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, and pleural effusions. Lung cancer is caused by asbestos fibers that are inhaled and irritate lung tissues, resulting in the growth of tumors. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen and is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestosis is a progressive lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers, resulting in the scarring and thickening of the lungs. Pleural effusions occur when pleural mesothelioma causes a build-up of fluid in the cavity between the lungs and the chest wall. In some cases, asbestos exposure can also cause benign (non-cancerous) conditions such as pleural plaques and benign pleural effusions. Pleural plaques are patches of fibrous tissue that can form on the lungs or chest wall due to asbestos exposure. Benign pleural effusions are fluid collections around the lungs caused by asbestos exposure. If you have been exposed to asbestos, it is important to talk to your doctor and get regular screenings. Early detection and treatment can help minimize the risk of developing any of these asbestos-related diseases.
