What is the law for driving with a suspended license?

In the District of Columbia, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while your driver’s license is suspended. Driving with a suspended license is a serious offense and can have serious penalties, including fines, jail time, suspension of your license and/or disqualification from operating a vehicle for an extended period. If your license has been suspended, you will receive notification from the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) or from the court. Depending on the reason for the suspension, you may need to pay a reinstatement fee and obtain proof of insurance and/or complete a driver improvement program. If you are pulled over driving with a suspended license, you may be arrested and taken to jail. You may face a fine of up to $1,000, be sentenced to up to 180 days in jail, or face both a fine and jail time. Additionally, your vehicle may be impounded, and you may face additional charges, such as failing to appear in court or operating without registration or insurance. Finally, your license may be suspended for an extended period – up to one year – and you may be required to appear in court before your license will be reinstated. To ensure your eligibility, always check the DC DMV website and read any notices you receive from the DC DMV or court.
