What are the laws about parking in a designated handicap parking space?
In Alaska, parking in designated handicap parking spaces is a serious offense. Under state law, it is illegal for anyone who does not have a valid disabled parking permit to park in a designated handicap parking space. In Alaska, a person with a qualifying disability is eligible to receive a valid disabled parking permit from the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles. The penalties for parking in a designated handicap parking spot without a valid permit are severe. An individual found guilty of parking in a handicap space may be ticketed and must pay a fine ranging from $50 to $250. The individual may also be required to pay court costs. Repeat offenders may have their licenses suspended or revoked. Furthermore, in some circumstances, parking in a designated handicap parking space can be considered a criminal offense. For instance, if an individual who does not have a valid disabled parking permit knowingly parks in a designated handicap spot and does not move the vehicle after being asked to do so, they may charged with a criminal offense. There are also a number of other rules and regulations relating to the use of designated handicap parking spots. For example, disabled parking spots must remain open for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, unless posted otherwise. In addition, individuals may not block a handicap access aisle adjacent to a disabled parking space, as this makes it difficult for someone with a disability to access the space.
