What are the laws about driving in the left lane?

In the District of Columbia, drivers should always operate their vehicles in the right lane, except if they need to pass another vehicle, or if directed otherwise by traffic signs and signals. The left lane is reserved for high-speed traffic, and drivers should use the lane only if they’re traveling faster than regular traffic. Drivers should not remain in the left lane for an extended period just because they’re driving faster than the cars in the right lanes. Drivers who need to pass another vehicle can use the left lane to do so, but must do so safely and promptly. Drivers should only stay in the left lane for as long as it takes to pass the other vehicle and then get back over to the right lane. If there is no immediate need to pass another vehicle, then drivers should not enter the left lane at all and should remain in the right lane. Drivers who violate the law by remaining in the left lane for extended periods or cause other drivers to slow down by not appropriately allowing faster traffic in the left lane may face a fine of up to $250. So, it’s important to obey the laws of the road and be aware of your surroundings when driving in the District of Columbia, always keeping in mind the rules and regulations of left lane driving.
