What is the legal age to get a driver's license?

In order to obtain a driver’s license in the District of Columbia (DC), you must be at least 16 years old. Along with being 16 years old, you must also have completed driver’s education, and pass the written, vision and driving tests. To apply for a license, it is a good idea to gather the necessary documents and items before you go to the DC Department of Motor Vehicles. These documents include proof of identity, residency, SSN, proof of insurance, and payment for the fee. In the case of the written test, you must receive at least 70 percent correct answers in order to pass. The test consists of questions about traffic signs, safe driving practices, and DC driving laws. After you successfully complete the written test, you must pass a vision test. The vision test is designed to make sure your vision meets the legal requirements to drive. Finally, you will be asked to take a road skills test. This is designed to demonstrate your ability to safely maneuver in traffic while obeying all DC traffic laws. After the test, you will be given the option to take the picture for your driver’s license. When you pass all three tests and have provided your paperwork, you will be issued an instruction permit. This will allow you to drive with an adult over the age of 21 for a minimum of six months. After the 6-month period, you will be eligible to receive your full driver’s license.
