What are the laws about child restraint systems?
In Tennessee, children under one year old, or children who weigh less than 20 pounds, must be in a rear-facing infant car seat. For children one year old and over, or those over 20 pounds, must be in a forward-facing child safety seat. In addition, children who are 4-8 years old must be in a booster seat and all children under the age of 13 must ride in the back seat. It is highly recommended that the car seats and booster seats be properly secured and installed, and that they be registered with the manufacturer to get up-to-date recall information. It is also important to make sure the restraints fit the child properly and that the child is safely secured with the seat belt. Finally, Tennessee law requires that all car seats be changed every three to five years, or whenever the manufacturer advises. It is also important to note that there are fines and penalties for not following these child restraint laws. For example, violating the child restraint law is a Class C misdemeanor, and if a child is injured or killed while not restrained, the driver may face criminal charges.
