What is the law about leaving a child alone in a car?
In Arizona, it is illegal to leave a child under the age of seven alone in a car. If an adult leaves a child unattended in a car for more than fifteen minutes, they could face a misdemeanor charge. Even if the driver is running a quick errand, the law states that they must either have a passenger in the car who is fourteen or older to act as a guardian, or they must leave the car running and the child locked in it. For a child between the ages of seven and fifteen, they may not be left alone for more than an hour. Furthermore, for all unattended minors, the engine must be turned off and the windows must be cracked for ventilation. This same rule applies in extreme temperatures, such as if the inside of the car is becoming hot or cold. If any of these state laws are broken, the parents of the child could face jail time, as well as steep fines. The Arizona Child Protective Services may investigate any reports of children being left alone in cars, and they may also take action against the parent or guardian. In Arizona, it is illegal to leave any minor unattended in a car. The laws around leaving a child in a car are extremely strict, and there can be serious consequences for those found to be in violation.
