What are the laws about speeding?
In the District of Columbia, motorists are advised to obey all posted speed limits and to drive at an appropriate speed according to road and traffic conditions. Under District law, motorists are not allowed to exceed the posted speed limit. The penalty for speeding is a fine and/or points on a driver’s record. The fine and administrative penalty depends on the speed the driver was traveling when ticketed. For example, a motorist who is ticketed for exceeding the speed limit by 1-10 mph will pay a fine of $50 and have 2 points added to his or her record. A motorist ticketed for exceeding the speed limit by 11-20 mph will pay a fine of $300 and have 4 points added to his or her record. The District of Columbia also has an aggressive driving law. Under this law, a driver is subject to fines and points on his or her record if he or she is ticketed for multiple moving violations within the same incident. A motorist who is ticketed for aggressive driving can have up to 8 points added to his or her record. Finally, motorists who are convicted of exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 mph are subject to criminal penalties. These penalties include fines of up to $1,000 and/or jail time of up to 90 days. In addition, the motorist’s driver’s license may be suspended for up to 90 days. In general, it is important for motorists in the District of Columbia to obey all posted speed limits and to drive at a safe and appropriate speed according to road and traffic conditions. Failing to do so can result in fines, points on a driver’s record, suspension of a driver’s license, and/or criminal penalties.
