What are the laws about driving an unregistered or uninsured vehicle?

In South Carolina, it is illegal to drive an unregistered vehicle or drive an uninsured vehicle. This means that anyone who operates a vehicle on public property must have a valid license plate and registration for their vehicle, as well as insurance coverage for their vehicle. Driving an unregistered vehicle may result in a ticket being issued by law enforcement and a fine of up to $231. Driving without insurance coverage is a more severe violation, and is considered a summary offense with a maximum fine of $570. Even an unemployed individual is required to have a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage for their vehicle. Moreover, if uninsured and unregistered vehicles are impounded by law enforcement, a special fee will be assessed on the vehicle in order to cover the cost of the impound. In addition, the vehicle will be held by the impound lot until all the fees and fines are paid in full. Without registration and insurance coverage, South Carolina law states that the vehicle may not be re-registered until all fees and fines have been cleared. In conclusion, anyone operating a vehicle on public property in South Carolina must be sure to have a valid license plate and registration of their vehicle, as well as insurance coverage for the vehicle. Not having either of the two can be a costly mistake, as it may lead to a ticket or even a seizure of the vehicle.
