What are the laws about driving while using a cell phone?
Driving while using a cell phone is a safety risk that the District of Columbia (D.C.) recognizes. As such, they have enacted laws to prevent people from operating a vehicle while using their cell phone. In D.C., drivers are not allowed to use a handheld cellular device while driving. This includes talking on the phone, composing, reading, or sending electronic messages, or viewing, taking, or transmitting images or videos. Even if you’re stopped at a red light, you are not allowed to use your phone. This applies to all drivers – including those over the age of 18, school bus drivers, and those who are operating commercial vehicles. Drivers who are found to be in violation of the law can be fined up to $50. Drivers who are found to be in violation for the third or subsequent time can face higher fines, additional court costs, and the possibility of having their license suspended or revoked. It is also important to note that in D.C., it is illegal to text while driving. In addition, it is illegal for those under the age of 18 to have their phones on while driving. Driving is an important responsibility and D.C. has put laws in place to help ensure its residents are driving safely. Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and never operate a vehicle while using a phone.
