What are the laws about driving while using a cell phone?

In Tennessee, it is illegal to drive a vehicle while using any device that requires holding it in your hand, such as a cell phone. However, voice-activated, hands-free devices that allow you to talk on the phone without having to hold the device are allowed. Those under the age of 18 are not allowed to use a cell phone at any times while driving, no matter if the device is hands-free or not. Adults aged 18 and over are also not allowed to use a cell phone while driving in a school zone or in a construction zone. If you are caught driving while using a cell phone in a restricted area, you could be given a citation or even fined. Additionally, in Tennessee there is an “implied consent” law, which means that if you are pulled over while driving, the police can ask to see your phone records to check if you were using a phone at the time of the violation. If it is determined that you were using a phone while driving, your license could be suspended or revoked. Therefore, it is important for all drivers in the state of Tennessee to be aware of the laws around cell phone use while operating a vehicle. Doing so can help avoid costly fines or other penalties from being given.
