What is the law about right-of-way at intersections?
In the state of California, laws governing right-of-way at intersections are set in place to help ensure the safety of all drivers. Generally, these laws dictate that the driver of a vehicle must yield the right-of-way to another driver when entering an intersection. When two vehicles are approaching an intersection from different directions, and both drivers enter the intersection at the same time, the driver who is on the left must yield to the driver who is on their right. This rule applies regardless of who has a green light or who has the right-of-way indicated by a stop sign or other traffic control device. If two vehicles are approaching the intersection from the same direction and either driver is making a turn, the driver turning should yield to the driver who is going straight. When driving up a hill, vehicles at the bottom of the hill have the right-of-way over those approaching the intersection from the top of the hill. If a driver is merging onto a highway or street, they should always yield to the vehicles that are already traveling in that lane. The primary purpose of right-of-way laws is to help reduce the number of collisions that occur at intersections. If everyone follows the law and yields when appropriate, then everyone will be safer on the roads. Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and be on the lookout for potential hazards, including vehicles that may not be yielding in accordance with the right-of-way laws.
