What are the laws about street racing?

In West Virginia, street racing is absolutely illegal. According to the West Virginia Code, Section 17C-15-2, “[a]ny person who engages in a race or speed competition on a public highway or street is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars or incarcerated in the county jail not more than six months, or both.” This means that if you are found racing on any public street or highway, you can be subject to a fine of up to five hundred dollars and/or jail time of six months. Furthermore, if you are caught street racing in West Virginia, your vehicle can be confiscated and impounded for up to thirty days. You may also be required to forfeit your license to the court and complete a defensive driving course. If you are caught organizing a street race, you can face up to six months in jail, a fine of up to five hundred dollars, and a license suspension of up to one year. Additionally, the court may impose court costs to you as well as any other financial obligations deemed necessary by the court. Overall, street racing is an incredibly risky activity and the consequences in West Virginia can be severe. If you choose to participate in or organize a street race, you are risking not only your safety but also the safety of others. It is best to avoid risky behavior like street racing and be aware of the consequences you may face if you choose to do so.
