What are the laws about automotive modifications?
In North Carolina, automotive modifications must abide by state laws in order to be considered legal. Generally speaking, the modifications must not interfere with the normal functioning of the vehicle. Additionally, any modifications must not obstruct the driver’s view of the road. Any alterations that may affect the engine or emissions must be approved and certified by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Modifications to the exhaust system, such as noise mufflers, must comply with state exhaust emission standards, and any external modifications must meet the standards set forth by North Carolina’s laws for safety and size. All non-factory modifications must adhere to certain requirements and must pass a detailed safety inspection prior to being officially permitted by the state. Furthermore, all laws must also be noted and followed when determining the type and amount of external lighting that can be added to a vehicle, as certain types and brightnesses are not allowed. Any alteration to the steering and suspension of the vehicle must meet the federal motor vehicle safety standards for that specific make and model. Tinted or reflective windows may also be installed provided it does not obstruct the driver’s vision. It is important to note, however, that any modifications made must adhere to the laws set forth by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.
