What are the laws about towing a trailer?

In New York, there are laws that govern the towing of a trailer. All drivers who tow a trailer must follow the safety requirements specific to New York State. The trailer must be able to carry its load safely, and must have the correct number of brakes, lights, echoes, and safety chains that meet the standards set by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It is illegal to overtake or pass a trailer that is being towed unless the vehicle towing the trailer signals that it is safe to do so. All vehicles must stay at least four car lengths between them and the trailer. All trailers that weigh over 3,000 pounds must be registered with the DMV. The DMV also requires all motorists to have proof of insurance that will cover the trailer. Also, the trailer must have the correctnumber of safety chains that equal or exceed its weight and are securely attached to the towing vehicle. It is also important to note that the trailer must be able to be seen from the back. This means that the trailer must have working taillights and brake lights that are visible from at least 500 feet away. All trailers must also have functioning turn signals, even when the trailer is not attached to the towing vehicle. These signals must be clearly visible from the front and back. Lastly, all trailers must be equipped with a functioning breakaway safety device that will automatically engage the brakes of the trailer when it becomes detached from the towing vehicle. Following these laws will ensure safe and legal towing of a trailer in New York.
