What are the laws about driving without insurance?

In Pennsylvania, driving without insurance is illegal. Drivers must have liability insurance in order to legally operate a vehicle. Liability insurance covers any property damage or injury that is caused by the insured during an accident. Without liability insurance, the driver can be held financially responsible for any damage or injury they cause. The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code outlines several rules related to driving without insurance. A driver found to be driving without insurance is subject to a $300 fine for a first offense. Subsequent offenses have an increased penalty of up to $1,000. Additionally, drivers found to be operating a vehicle without insurance will have their vehicle registration suspended. Vehicle registrations remain suspended until proof of insurance is provided to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. In some cases, a driver can be completely barred from operating a vehicle if they are found to have multiple, successive violations of driving without insurance. The driver’s license will remain suspended for three years and they can be subject to additional fines and even possible jail time. It is important to remember that Pennsylvania law does not just apply to cars. Motorcycles, boats, and even some recreational vehicles are all required to carry liability insurance in order to be legally operated. Drivers should always make sure to have the necessary insurance before getting behind the wheel.
