What are the laws about tinted headlights?
Tinted headlights are regulated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). In order for headlights to be considered legally tinted, they must meet PennDOT regulations. Additionally, any after-market modifications made to the headlights must be approved by PennDOT in order for them to be considered legal. The legal minimum allowable light transmission of a tinted headlight is 70%. This means that the light from the headlight needs to be 70% the brightness of an untinted headlight. This is determined by using a light transmission meter, which is able to measure the amount of light that is transmitted through the headlight. It is important to note that headlight tint is only allowed on the headlight lens. Any tinting of the headlight bulb is illegal as it significantly decreases visibility. Additionally, reflective tinting is illegal as this type of tint increases the light reflection and glare, reducing the ability of drivers to see the road. In Pennsylvania, headlights are required to be used at all times when driving in order to maintain a safe driving environment, so it is important to ensure that any tinted headlights meet PennDOT regulations in order to prevent any legal violations. Additionally, drivers should make sure that any after-market modifications to their headlights are approved by PennDOT, as failing to do so could result in a fine.
