What are the laws about tinted windows?

In Washington State, tinted windows are legal but there are laws that dictate how dark you can make them. Generally speaking, the law states that no window may be tinted darker than 35% light transmission. This means that for every square inch of the window, 35% of the light is allowed to pass through. However, some vehicles are permitted to have tinted windows that are darker than that. For example, vehicles registered for "farm use" are permitted to have windows that are 25% light transmission or darker. Additionally, there are also certain exceptions for front-seat side windows. These windows are allowed to be tinted up to 24% light transmission, but only if the vehicle is equipped with side-view mirrors on both sides. When it comes to the rear window, no window may be tinted any darker than 16% light transmission, regardless of the vehicle’s use. It is also illegal to add any kind of reflective material to your windows. This includes reflective, mirrored, or metallic tinting, which can make the window look darker than it actually is. For all tinted windows, the law also requires a sticker on the inside of the window that states the light transmission percentage so that law enforcement officers can easily determine if a vehicle is in compliance with the law. It is important to note that these laws apply to all private and commercial vehicles, including recreational and off-road vehicles, in Washington State.
