What are the laws about using a cell phone while driving?
Using a cell phone while driving in Tennessee is against the law. This includes talking on a cell phone, typing or texting, playing games, or taking pictures. The only exceptions are for hands-free devices that do not require the driver to hold or manipulate the device in order to operate it. Drivers under 18 years old are prohibited from using any type of cell phone while operating a motor vehicle at any time, even with a hands-free device. All drivers are prohibited from using cell phones in school zones or construction zones. Violators of these laws will be subject to a fine of up to $50 the first time they are caught and up to $100 for any subsequent violations. Additionally, drivers found to be using their cell phone while driving will receive one point on their driving record. Too many points on your driving record will result in higher insurance rates and could lead to the suspension of your driving privileges. For your safety, and the safety of all those around you, it is best to refrain from using your cell phone while driving. If you need to make a call or send a text message, pull off the road and come to a complete stop before you use your phone. Remember, it only takes a moment of distraction to cause a serious accident.
