What are the laws about passing school buses?

In Pennsylvania, it is illegal to pass a school bus that has its red lights and stop arm activated. All vehicles must come to a complete stop, regardless of whether they are traveling in the opposite direction or behind the bus on the same side of the road. If a vehicle is traveling the opposite direction of the bus, drivers must stop at least 10 feet away from the front or rear of the bus. If a vehicle is traveling behind the bus, the vehicle must stop before reaching the bus. Once the lights and stop arm are no longer activated, drivers may resume driving. In addition to stopping and allowing students to disembark safely, Pennsylvania drivers must be particularly attentive to the road and surrounding area even after the lights and arm are no longer activated, as students can still be entering the roadway. Furthermore, if a driver fails to come to a complete stop after the red lights and stop arm are activated, a driver may face a hefty fine and license suspension. Drivers should remain vigilant for any sign of children crossing the street or the street itself and ensure that all school bus laws are followed.
