How is civil aviation law different from criminal aviation law?

Civil aviation law and criminal aviation law are two different areas of the law. Civil aviation law governs the regulation of aircraft and commercial air travel. It establishes the rights and duties of passengers, pilots, crew, and airlines operating within the airspace. Civil aviation law also sets the standards for aircraft safety, aircraft performance, airworthiness, and enforcement of regulations. Criminal aviation law deals with violations of the civil aviation law. It is the legal framework that is designed to ensure safe and lawful travel in the airspace. Criminal aviation law outlines the types of violations and the various types of punishments that are associated with those violations. Examples of criminal aviation laws include those that prohibit flying without a license, flying under the influence, or engaging in reckless or careless behavior while piloting an aircraft. In Minnesota, civil aviation law is governed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). The FAA has the authority to issue regulations that set standards for aircraft, crew, and operations as well as enforcing those standards. MnDOT is responsible for the administration of the Minnesota aeronautical system, including airports, air navigation, aircraft and pilot certification, and air traffic control. Criminal aviation law is enforced by the courts and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
