What are the responsibilities of an aircraft owner or operator?

In Vermont, aircraft owners or operators have a set of responsibilities that must be followed in order for the aircraft to be legally flown. The most important responsibility is to abide by all regulations set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These regulations are intended to ensure the safety of passengers and crew aboard the aircraft, as well as those on the ground. Additionally, aircraft owners and operators also have a responsibility to keep their aircraft properly maintained. This often includes regularly performing a variety of safety inspections, such as the standard pre-flight inspection, to make sure all systems are functioning properly. These inspections must be completed according to the requirements of the FAA and aircraft manufacturer. Other responsibilities include obtaining and maintaining the proper certifications for the aircraft, as well as the pilots. This includes having a valid pilot certificate for the aircraft, as well as ensuring the aircraft is properly registered with the FAA. Other legal documents must be obtained, such as an aircraft insurance policy, liability waivers, and maintenance logs. Finally, aircraft owners and operators must keep track of their aircraft’s activities, including flight hours, fuel burn rate, weight and balance calculations, and any other pertinent information necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft. This information is then used by the FAA to monitor the airworthiness of all aircraft operating in Vermont.
