What is the process for filing a flight plan?
In Kansas, filing a flight plan prior to departure is a key part of aviation law to ensure a safe and successful flight. The process for filing a flight plan begins with the pilot of the aircraft contacting an air traffic controller at an FAA Flight Services District Office, if available, or through a local Flight Service Station (FSS). The pilot should provide their destination, route of flight, type of aircraft, and estimated time of departure and arrival. The pilot will then need to provide a list of information to the controller or Flight Service Station, which includes their pilot certificate number, aircraft registration number, aircraft type, the number of persons on board, point of departure, destination, route of flight, and the estimated time en route. The controller/FSS will provide a specific transponder code which the pilot must enter into the aircraft’s unit prior to takeoff. Once the flight plan has been filed, the controller or Flight Service Station will monitor the progress of the flight and communicate with the pilot regarding any pertinent information about the flight. In the event of an emergency, the controller/FSS will also ensure the appropriate authorities are promptly notified. In addition, the pilot must ensure that the flight plan is closed upon arrival to the destination airport. This can be done by either contacting the local Flight Service Station or the designated air traffic control facility. Once the flight plan is closed, the pilot will be able to submit a post-flight report.
