How are airworthiness standards determined?
Airworthiness standards are determined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA is responsible for setting and enforcing standards for aircraft and pilots in the United States. In order to be certified as airworthy, an aircraft must meet certain requirements set forth by the FAA. The FAA requires aircraft to meet certain airworthiness standards in order to be approved to fly. These standards include such things as structural integrity, flight safety systems, and aircraft performance capabilities. Additionally, certain aircraft components, such as engines, propellers, fuel tanks, and brakes, must meet certain standards as well. The FAA also requires aircraft to be inspected regularly to ensure they are meeting airworthiness standards. Aircraft must be inspected at least once every twelve months, or after any significant changes, such as modifications, repairs, or upgrades. The FAA also requires aircraft to be inspected after any reported incidents, such as an in-flight emergency or a gear-up landing. Once an aircraft has been inspected and approved, it will be given a permanent airworthiness certificate by the FAA. This certificate states that the aircraft meets all necessary airworthiness standards and is safe to fly. The FAA also requires all aircraft to maintain a current airworthiness certificate in order to be flown legally.
