What is the process for obtaining an air carrier certificate?

In order to obtain an air carrier certificate in Texas, the business or individual must meet certain criteria set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Air carrier certificates, also known as Operating Certificates, are formal documents that authorize air carriers to transport people or goods for hire. The process for obtaining an air carrier certificate involves meeting requirements set out by the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR). The certificate holder must obtain a letter of authorization from the FAA and provide evidence of compliance with the provisions of the FAR. The applicant must also demonstrate financial soundness and provide a certificate of insurance. In addition, the applicant must provide evidence of a safety management system and adequate support facilities. This includes equipment and personnel necessary for operations. The applicant must also demonstrate to the FAA that the intended operations are in the public interest and are consistent with national air transportation policy. Once all of these requirements have been met, the applicant must receive a “Certificate of Authorization” from the FAA. The applicant must then submit an application to the Texas Department of Transportation for the air carrier certificate. Once all requirements have been met and the application approved, the air carrier certificate will be issued.
