What are the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate?
In Minnesota, the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate are quite specific. In order to obtain a certificate, an individual must be between the ages of 16 and 60, and must pass a physical examination by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). The AME must be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In addition, the individual must have a valid driver’s license, and must be able to prove that he or she has the necessary visual, auditory, and physical fitness required for the operation of an aircraft. During the physical examination, the AME will look for any illnesses or physical impairments that could adversely affect the individual’s ability to safely operate an aircraft. For instance, the individual must have good eyesight and must not be taking any medication that would cause drowsiness or impair judgment. Additionally, the individual must have good hearing, strength, coordination, and a healthy cardiovascular system. In order to receive an aviation medical certificate, individuals must have a valid application that has been completed in its entirety and signed by the applicant. This includes a certification of the physical examination by the AME, as well as a detailed description of any physical impairments or conditions that could affect the individual’s ability to operate an aircraft. Lastly, the individual must pass a written examination on the knowledge of aviation rules and regulations. Once these requirements are met, the individual will be issued an aviation medical certificate, which must be renewed every two years.
