What are the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate?

To obtain an aviation medical certificate in North Carolina, there are certain criteria you must meet. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all pilots to be medically fit in order to operate an aircraft, which means having a valid medical certificate. To obtain this medical certificate, you must first pass a physical examination conducted by an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). During this examination, the AME will assess your physical and mental fitness to fly, based on the standards established by the FAA. You must provide a comprehensive medical history and answer questions relating to any medical conditions you may have and any medications you’re taking. The AME may also take measurements such as vision and hearing tests, as well as blood tests. In addition to the medical examination, you must also obtain a Student Pilot Certificate. This certificate requires identification information, including a valid state driver’s license or passport. You must also be able to present a log book to the FAA outlining at least six hours of flight time with an approved instructor, plus a course that covers topics such as rules, regulations, and safety protocol. Once you have passed the medical and flight tests, you can receive your aviation medical certificate from the FAA. A medical certificate is valid for five years for pilots under the age of 40 and two years for those 40 and older. You must also pass a medical examination every year or two in order to maintain your certification.
