What are the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate?
To obtain an aviation medical certificate through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington, individuals must meet certain medical requirements. Those who hold a Sport, Recreational, or Private Pilot certificate must meet the third-class medical requirements. To fulfill these requirements, individuals must get an aviation medical exam with an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner. This exam includes a physical exam, as well as physical and psychological tests to determine whether the applicant is physically and mentally fit to operate an aircraft. Individuals who hold a Commercial Pilot certificate or Airline Transport Pilot certificate must meet the first-class medical requirements. These include being at least 18 years of age, having an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner’s medical certificate, and being found physically qualified with no medical condition that makes them unable to fly an aircraft safely. In addition, applicants may also need to get an electrocardiogram or audiogram to determine the state of their heart and hearing, respectively. All applicants must also pass a vision test and provide a blood sample for drug testing. After a successful medical exam, the applicant will receive a medical certificate for their respective pilot certificate. This is typically valid for 12-18 months, unless the FAA requires more frequent tests. The FAA requires that all pilots keep a copy of their medical certificate with them during each flight.
