What are the requirements for aircraft pilots?

In Hawaii, all aircraft pilots must obtain an appropriate pilot certificate or license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The type of certificate or license you need to operate an aircraft in Hawaii depends on the type of flying you are doing. All pilots must pass an FAA written test and a flying knowledge test to receive a certificate or license. In order to obtain any type of pilot certification, you must be at least 16 years old and able to read, speak, write, and understand English. You must also be medically fit to fly competently. A medical examination has to be completed every two years or sooner if the FAA requires it. If you are planning to act as pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers or cargo for hire, you must obtain an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. To obtain an ATP, you must have logged at least 1,500 hours of pilot in command time, and at least 500 hours of cross-country flight time. In addition, all pilots must be familiar with the applicable FAA regulations and the local airspace. They must also be proficient in navigation and communication and be able to make safe and suitable decisions based on the facts and circumstances.
