What is the process for obtaining a medical certificate for a commercial pilot?

In order to obtain a medical certificate for a commercial pilot operating in the state of Maine, the individual must first meet the medical requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for a Commercial Pilot Certificate. The FAA medical requirements vary depending on the type of license sought, but generally, applicants must be at least 18 years old and be able to pass a physical exam conducted by an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). During the exam, the AME will review the applicant’s medical history, take vital signs, and perform an eye exam. The AME will also review the results of any further tests or examinations that may be required for a specific medical certificate. The applicant may also be required to provide results from a drug test and/or psychological screening. Once the physical exam is complete, the AME will issue either a First-, Second-, or Third-Class Medical Certificate, depending on the requirements for the type of license sought. This certificate is valid for a period of either one, two, or five years, depending on the type of certificate. Individuals who wish to obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate must also complete additional education and flight training, as well as pass the FAA knowledge and practical exams. After all of these requirements have been completed, the individual will receive their license and be able to begin operating commercially as a pilot.
