What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance personnel?
In Massachusetts, aircraft maintenance personnel must meet the qualifications and requirements outlined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These requirements have been set out in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). In order to perform aircraft maintenance, the individual must possess a valid Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) certificate, issued by the FAA. This certificate is required for all personnel involved in the maintenance, repair, and alteration of any aircraft. Furthermore, all A&P certificate holders must attend a recurrent training program once every 24 months. Individuals performing maintenance on aircraft in Massachusetts must have an FAA-approved Repairman Certificate. The type of Repairman Certificate held depends on the type of aircraft on which the maintenance is being performed. Those who perform maintenance on experimental aircraft must have an Experimental Aircraft Maintenance Technician Certificate. Those who perform maintenance on amateur-built aircraft must have an Amateur-Built Aircraft Maintenance Technician Certificate. Aircraft maintenance personnel in Massachusetts must also follow the rules and regulations set out in the FAA “Advisory Circulars” (ACs). These ACs provide guidance on aircraft maintenance topics such as corrosion prevention and control, inspections, and repairs. Overall, the requirements for aircraft maintenance personnel in Massachusetts are set out by the FAA’s FARs, and must be followed in order to safely and legally work on aircraft.
