What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance records?

In Minnesota, aircraft maintenance records are required to contain certain detailed information. This includes the date of maintenance, the part or item of equipment serviced or repaired, a description of the work performed and the signature of the mechanic who did the work. Airframe, engine, propeller, appliance, and instrument log books must also include the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Form 8130-3 or proper records covering the overhaul, repair, or alteration of the item serviced. Additionally, all maintenance performed on aircraft must be entered in the aircraft log books. This includes the date of the maintenance, the parts or items of equipment serviced or repaired, a description of the work performed, the person or organization that performed the work, and the signature of the mechanic who did the work. Maintenance performed on and installed parts must include the manufacturer’s name and part number, as well as the date of installation. Inspection records are also kept in the aircraft log books. This includes an entry for each annual or condition inspection, as well as for any special or 100-hour inspections. The entry must include the date of the inspection, a description of the work performed, and the signature of the inspector. Finally, aircraft maintenance records must be kept organized and easily accessible. These records must be kept for two years after the aircraft has been sold, destroyed, or taken out of service, and must be made available for inspection by the FAA upon request.
