What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance technicians?

In Wisconsin, aircraft maintenance technicians are subject to certain requirements set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In order to become an aircraft maintenance technician, individuals must first obtain an A & P (Airframe & Powerplant) certification from the FAA. This certification requires that individuals hold at least a high school diploma or an equivalent, be able to read, write, and speak English, and be at least 18 years of age. In addition to the general requirements, individuals must also complete at least 30 months of on-the-job experience in aircraft maintenance, inspection, or alterations, or complete an FAA-approved aviation maintenance technician school. The experience or school program must include instruction in mathematics, physics, electricity, mechanical drawing and other related courses. Other requirements may include the ability to pass a physical exam, pass extensive background checks, and have a valid driver’s license. In order to maintain certification, aircraft maintenance technicians must also complete at least 14 hours of FAA-approved recurring training and pass a test to prove proficiency. In order to work as an aircraft maintenance technician in Wisconsin, individuals must possess the necessary skills and knowledge to properly inspect and maintain aircraft. By meeting all the requirements set forth by the FAA, aircraft maintenance technicians have the opportunity to work in a career field that is both rewarding and challenging.
